Update from the President

Frankie Cocanour

Board Meeting:

Last night at the board meeting we had 4 classified people and two faculty speak on behalf of our contract. One of the faculty employees spoke exclusively about how unfair the contract is and about how overworked classified employees are and that the college could not survive without us. That is of course a loose summary of what was said and I encourage everyone to listen to the board meeting themselves.

My biggest takeaway from the meeting is that the board showed genuine concern about our contract not being fair. They want to hear from us all.

If you prepared a statement, but wasn’t able to make it to the meeting or would like to write one now and get it to the board members, please email it to them.

Bargaining:

We turned over our counter proposals to the college on Tuesday. We are currently working on getting all of the articles that we give to the college on the website This week we turned over our counter proposal on the Benefits 13, 17, New 13, and 11. We put in a strong proposal for our wages, one that will catch us up on Western CPI and give steps. For benefits we didn’t budge on the OEBB stopgap language, what we bargained for on section 125 last year, we asked for the same early retirement that they give to faculty, and we asked for them to change the Benefit Stipend In Lieu Of Insurance for 1039’s to $250 from $150.

General Membership Meeting:

Our next GMM will be September 21st at LCC19 226 starting at 1:45 pm. We look forward to seeing everyone there.

Insurance:

Please don’t forget to sign up for your insurance benefits. Please remember that we are still bargaining for the stop loss language.

Reclassification Deadline:

If you need assistance please contact our VP of Labor. The deadline is October 1st.

If you want fair compensation and a decent say in our workloads/classification, if you want more benefits for time sheet “at will” employees, and you don’t want to risk days of picketing in the cold on strike… you have to take action now.

You have a story to tell that speaks to the classified situation on campus… positions that are under paid, over worked, under staffed, disrespected, unable to keep up with cost of living in this area… share your stories with us and the Board. Stand with your bargaining team and union now, so we can get that contract we deserve without going through the extreme steps of mediation and a strike. Join the CAT actions and speak with your coworkers.
