Issue # 50: July 20, 2023

Update from the President

Frankie Cocanour

Bargaining:

Tuesday’s Bargaining session we are going to be discussing the new 11, 12, 13, and 14 that discuss personnel policies, layoff, recall, seniority, reclass, reclass appeal, classification system, vacancies, trial period, reassignments, and administrative transfers. All of these items were either packed into a single article or placed into multiple articles in a way that made the contract cumbersome and hard to work through. This is an attempt by the college and the bargaining team to make our contract clearer. So in this bargaining session July 25th, we will be taking two hours instead of one. It will be starting at 10:00 am and both sides of the table will treat it like a work session where we try to work as a team to get it organized and clearer. We will still be bargaining on the items that are listed above.I would like to thank everyone that attends the sessions. It really encourages the bargaining team to know that everyone is there and listening to what is happening. We know that it is not as entertaining as Netflix or Max, but it is important to have everyone there. And don’t forget to email Colin to join the bargaining slack group.

Appointments To Councils:

We are almost there! I’m really grateful to everyone that has committed to serving on a council this year. We have one council that still needs appointments. Please reach out to me if you would like to serve on the Student Success Council.

Vice President of Labor Relations

Buck Potter (2022-2023 Term)

Good Thursday to my colleagues:

We had a Labor Management meeting on Wednesday, July 12th, and discussed some current labor relations issues between Classified Members and Managers.

As part of our department meeting in Facilities, we discussed multiple options to help with the 6% Budget Reduction.  Most of our ideas were to decrease the footprint of buildings being used when minimal employees are in a building, along with other ideas.  I truly hope that the department you’re in is also having meetings with your team to discuss opportunities for reaching the 6% budget reduction that the College is asking for.

Summer is speeding by. Hopefully, you are able to find some time to enjoy the summer and relax. Bargaining through the articles is one thing, but as the team narrows the differences in the College and Union positions fiscal is being added in. It’s time to solidify our lines, items we won’t settle on and what would it take for us to reach an agreement. This will be the time to show our strength and unity. Make sure you are preparing for actions.

Membership Officer

Skye Nguyen (2022-2023 Term)

Hello everyone! I hope last week’s bargaining was better with the shared screen when speaking about article 4 for example. I plan to remember my laptop next time so I won’t need to worry as much about the content on my screen showing to everyone in the room! I hope this was valuable to you as I just want to provide the best experience possible for our members in zoom. We all appreciate you being there and being involved. 🙂

I will be out next week so you might not get an update from me next week but keep an eye out I might be able to get a new benefit of the week posted next week at least. Finally, if anyone ever wants to chat about how they can get involved with the union just tag me! :)If there are any questions about membership or someone has interest in joining, they can reach out to me (membership@lccef.org) or fill out the online membership form!
