Issue # 43: June 1, 2023
Update from the President
Frankie Cocanour
Bargaining:
We canceled our bargaining meeting on Tuesday because we didn’t have anything ready to put forward to the college and when we reached out to them, they also didn’t have anything prepared for us. We tried to notify everyone, and we apologize for the confusion.
Comp & Class:
We have brought this up to the college that we would like to go over this in bargaining. I would like to put together a subcommittee of classified employees that are very passionate about comp & class. We need to start working on this as soon as we can. I have one volunteer already. Please email me if you would like to join that subcommittee.
Child labor:in America:
Child labor exploitation really gets to me. I guess I feel that kids should be kids. Also, I am really uncomfortable with the idea of a kid serving me alcohol. I have gone down the rabbit hole of child labor exploitation as a way to lower labor costs by hiring kids at minimum wage. It’s pretty disgusting that this is a thing in this day and age.

Happy June! Instead of our bargaining session on Tuesday we had an impromptu discussion with our members who were there to observe. It was great to get more feedback and ideas, we have so many experts among us! I am excited to hear more from everyone at our membership meeting on the 15th.

Correction(s)
Last week I wrote about holidays and made two mistakes. Indigenous Peoples day is meant to replace Columbus Day, not Thanksgiving (although the argument can be made). Also, Robin reached out to me with a MOA which changed the holiday subsection – I have asked HR to correct their website and we hope to work the MOA into the contract we are currently working on. Sorry for the misinformation, that was not my intention.
Indigenous Peoples Day resolution
